The blue of Nishapur.

Nishapur is a historic city in what is now northeastern Iran, known for centuries for its turquoise mines. Turquoise is a color and stone loved in Turkish and Islamic art, from tilework to jewelry. In Nishapur Imperial, Sırlı Sepet interprets this heritage with the traditional knotted stringing technique.

Turquoise is a hydrated phosphate mineral containing copper and aluminum; it gets its blue color from copper. The Nishapur region has been known as one of the oldest turquoise-producing areas throughout history. It is a porous stone; its color may change with contact with water, oil, perfume, and chemicals. Traditionally, it is regarded as a symbol of the evil eye and good luck.

In natural stones, color tone, veining and pattern differ from piece to piece; these differences are not flaws but signs of the stone's authenticity. An identical pattern to the one in the photo should not be expected.
